The North Western frontier region of India that incorporated the beautiful state of Rajasthan remained independent and free from the great empires trying to consolidate their strong hold in this part of the subcontinent in the early periods. Even the great Mauryan Kingdom had little impact on the state's political environment during that times. According to the ancient scriptures, there is mention of Rajasthan especially Puskar in Mahabharata and the Ramayana.
Rajasthan has one of the most colorful and vibrant deserts in the world. The great Thar Desert has much to offer through a plethora of celebrations. Festivals and fairs, music and dance, are a part of life in the State as well as in the desert. The year long festive fervour and cattle marts turn into delightful fairs. Festivals hold an unusual lure for the Rajasthanis and they have any number of reasons to celebrate.
Not to forget to mention, the peoples of this region are warm and friendly. Whether visitors are in the big cities or in the quaint towns or the villages, the peoples are always at their help. Rajasthan is culturally rich and has extensive tradition in art and culture, which reflects the Indian way of life. The dance, music and art forms have been consciously cultivated and patronized by the erstwhile royal courts. An equally rich and varied folk culture from villages is both fascinating and mesmerizing.
The climate of Rajasthan can be divided into four seasons: summer, monsoon, post-monsoon and winter.
Summer extends from April to June, and is the hottest season, with temperatures ranging from 32°C to 45°C. In western Rajasthan the temperature may rise even to 48°C, particularly in May and June. At this time, Rajasthan's only hill station, Mt Abu registers the lowest temperatures.
The old walled city of Jaipur, the capital of the state takes back the onlookers to a history of 272 years. The wide streets,huge havelis, lined shops coupled with the businessmen, artisans and courtiers all brings the life of the past days back in to business.
The festivals of Rajasthan are to be seen when ever they are celebrated as the folks surrender themselves completely to the fanfare. Some of the most important festivals of the region are the Desert festival of Jaisalmer, Puskar Fair, Gangaur, Elephant festival, Marvar Festival, Camel Festival and the Mewar Festival held in Udaipur. The dancing, singing, devotional music and the other community activities can completely enthral the visitors to the land.
Rajasthan, the state which magnificently rests on the Northern part of India is full of colours. From the sand dunes,wooden hills,amazing lake palaces guarded by rugged forts, men and women in turbans and skirts of vivid colours, quite villages with camels and elephants and the bustling towns with the palace hotels, the harsh sunlight, the cool evening breeze are all to be found in abundance.
